Good at: 14 to 19 on the OWL gauge
Satler's is well known as one of the obstacles to get by as you paddle through McKoy's rapid; Phil's Hole being the other one. Satler's is the big hole on the river left side of the rapid, the first hole you will encounter on this section of the Ottawa River. Not even ten feet further downstream on the river right side is the notorious Phil's Hole.
There are at least three different lines through this rapid, and the "Satler's Punch" is arguably one of the easiest! Not many people try to surf either Phil's or Satler's. They are big and intimidating and have the reputation of giving people the rides of their lives.
Satler's Hole at high water turns into something less intimidating and more surfable. From 14 feet to 19 feet, it can actually become a fun wave-hole, and at lower water it can be good for cartwheels and tumblewheels. You have to surf this one on the fly however, as there is no eddy service.
