Good at: up to 12 feet
I know what you're probably thinking. Surf Phil's Hole? You must be out of your mind!
A lot of people do their best to avoid Phil's by either running the Satler's Punch, or threading the needle between Satler's and Phil's.
What you may not know, is that at most levels, Phil's can actually be a pretty exhilarating surf if you decide to drop in on the river left side.
Phil's has a left side and a right side with a fairly distinguishable tongue through the middle. The left side is generally big, fluffy and fun, at lower flows,
right side can be trashy and shallow. At higher flows (above 10 feet) left side washes out and right side can become a fun wave.
If nothing else, it gives you the feeling of not being in control in a hole, and can allow you to learn the skills to overcome this feeling. Depending on the levels, Phil's tends to be less retentive as you think it might, but be warned.... you most likely will get worked! Just hang on and you will usually flush out in less than 5 seconds!
